How to choose Khao Yai accommodation for a truly restful break

The best stay is the one that matches why you are going to Khao Yai. This article helps you work out what that is.

Plenty of people pick a Khao Yai stay from a pretty pool photo, then find they must drive almost an hour to reach the park, or that their beautiful villa sits next to a noisy road. These five questions help you avoid that.

1. Why are you going to Khao Yai?

If the goal is wildlife and hiking, closeness to the park entrance matters most, because animals are most active at dawn. If the goal is rest, spa and food, the resort matters more than the location. If you are going for wine, stay around Phaya Yen near the vineyards.

2. Match the area to the goal

Each area is described in the Khao Yai accommodation guide.

3. Choose the type of stay

Hotels and resorts suit travellers who want full service, restaurants, a spa and activities in one place. Pool villas suit couples who want privacy or families who want their own space. Vineyard rooms give a calm, rural feel. National park lodges suit those who want to sleep in the forest itself, with simple facilities.

4. Season and day of the week

The cool season (November to February) has the best weather and the biggest crowds; on long holidays Thanarat Road gets congested. Come on weekdays if you can. In the rainy season the forest is green, the waterfalls are full and rates are often more flexible.

5. Details to ask before booking
